It is one of the seven wonders of the world and a historical monument, symmetric in design. An example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Persian and Indian styles.

It was Shah Jahan; emperor of the Mughal Empire during a period of great prosperity who commissioned the Taj Mahal and decreed it to be built for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1632 and was completed in 1648.
